The gift box that inspired our new subscription.

Ohanga’s book subscription aims to provide a fuller reading experience by pairing the works of local artists with hand-selected books. Featuring various genres and Rhode Island art, the newly-launched subscription gives readers the chance to customize the consumables and books they receive. Subscribers will discover a thoughtfully crafted blend of items that create a meaningful encounter with literature.

The concept was inspired by the success of the Jane Austen Tea Club gift box, a seasonal offering in Winter 2020. Specifically, the gift box featured local Rhode Island consumables—Echinacea tea from Max’s Farm and raw honey from Yucky Rivah Bee Fahm—along with a vintage novel from Nostalgia, a fine art photography print by photographer and jeweler Nancy Reid Carr, and functional pieces—a tea mug from Pastels and Parcels and a handwoven dinner napkin by weaver Maya Tavares Cordeiro. By spotlighting particular pieces that illuminated and emphasized the aesthetic and style of Jane Austen’s novels, the gift box gave readers a deeper, all-encompassing reading experience that engaged the senses—the smell and taste of tea and honey, the sight of beautiful fine art and a handmade mug, and the feel of high quality dinner napkins and a cared-for vintage book.

With the new Book Subscription, Ohanga expands beyond the Jane Austen theme to include an abundance of book genres and consumables. Subscribers can expect unique combinations that have been extensively thought out and locally sourced. Example products include consumables like deliciously-scented soaking salts and candles, tasty teas, functional goods like mugs and earrings, and much more. Even the books will be sourced from Rhode Island small businesses. The featured books and products will change, so subscribers will always have fresh experiences to look forward to.

Furthermore, when customers have finished reading their novels, they can always explore the most recent copy of Ohanga’s Rhode Island magazine, Etch. A magazine for creatives, Etch gives everyone the chance to learn about the artists their purchases support, dive into fascinating articles about art and art history, read literary pieces, and meet the team behind the gift boxes and subscriptions. Physical copies of Etch will be sent out in all subscription boxes, but Etch can also be accessed on Ohanga’s website in its online magazine format.

Ohanga is excited to welcome you to the new Book Subscription and cannot wait to hear about the literary adventures you set out upon!

We envision a world in which creatives can grow and share their passions unburdened from the complexity of business management; a world where a community can easily access art for sale as well as celebrate and engage with their local artists.

For more Rhode Island art news, read Etch as an online magazine.
